Experimental Postdoctoral Researcher in Precision Levitated Inertial Sensing

Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) 📍 Onna Posted 6 weeks ago
¥4,500,000 – ¥5,900,000/yr

Develop advanced diamagnetic inertial sensors through experimental physics, working with an international team to maximize sensitivity while reducing working volume.

The position

We are searching for a person with a background in experimental physics to help with the experimental development of advanced diamagnetic inertial sensors. Inertial sensors are everywhere – helping you get from A to B – giving you acceleration information, both linear and rotational. The position would work with an international team which will be developing such inertial sensors – which we aim to maximize sensitivity while reducing the working volume.

This position will be funded through JST-NEXUS grant.

Unit Summary

The Quantum Machines Unit undertakes research focused on hybrid quantum systems – which brings together two or more quantum systems to function together to perform some useful action, e.g. developing ultra-precise sensors, exploring fundamental issues in quantum science, or quantum information processing. The Unit combines theory with experiment which works hand in hand. The Unit is particularly focused on diamagnetic levitation as this permits one to levitate quite large systems to control their motion towards the quantum regime. This levitation requires no active power and is expected to exhibit very low levels of motional noise. We are particularly interested to develop state-of-the-art inertial sensors using diamagnetic levitation in high vacuum at cryogenic temperatures.

  1. Assist in experiments in diamagnetic inertial sensors
  2. Contribute generally to the research of the Quantum Machines Unit, including attending meetings and seminars as well as mentoring student research and interfacing with our research administrator
